How to Get from Tokyo to Kamakura: JR vs Odakyu, Time and Fare
The easiest way from Tokyo to Kamakura is the JR line: about one hour with no change, paid with Suica. From Tokyo Station or Shinagawa, take the Yokosuka line. From Shinjuku or Shibuya, take the Shonan-Shinjuku line. If you’re starting in Shinjuku and also visiting Enoshima, the Odakyu line with the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass is slower but usually cheaper.
Quick answer
- From Tokyo Station or Shinagawa: JR Yokosuka line, direct, about 1 hour
- From Shinjuku or Shibuya: JR Shonan-Shinjuku line, direct, about 1 hour
- From Shinjuku, visiting Enoshima too: Odakyu line plus the Enoden with the 1,640-yen Freepass
- Ticket: Suica or PASMO works on every route below
- Prefer someone else to plan it: a guided day tour from Tokyo

The Kamakura City Tourist Association puts Kamakura at about one hour from central Tokyo by train, and that matches both JR routes.
Option 1: JR from Tokyo Station or Shinagawa (Yokosuka line)
This is the simplest route. The JR Yokosuka line runs from Tokyo Station through Shinagawa and Yokohama to Kamakura without a change.
- At Tokyo Station, follow the signs for the Yokosuka Line / Sobu Line (Rapid). The platforms are underground.
- Tap in with Suica or PASMO.
- Ride to Kamakura. Kita-Kamakura is the stop just before it.
Option 2: JR from Shinjuku or Shibuya (Shonan-Shinjuku line)
From Shinjuku, Shibuya or Ikebukuro, the JR Shonan-Shinjuku line goes to Kamakura without a change, but only on trains heading toward Zushi, Yokosuka or Kurihama. Trains heading toward Odawara or Kozu branch off at Ofuna, so if you board one, change at Ofuna to the Yokosuka line for one more stop to Kamakura.
Check the destination on the platform screen before you board. Shonan-Shinjuku trains are less frequent than the Yokosuka line, so a quick look at a route app saves a long wait.
Option 3: Odakyu line from Shinjuku (cheaper, and best with Enoshima)
The Odakyu route takes you to Fujisawa, where you switch to the Enoden, the small seaside railway that runs to Kamakura. It’s slower than JR, but it’s the cheapest way from Shinjuku and it passes right by Enoshima and the Great Buddha.
By IC card, one way costs 917 yen: 607 yen on Odakyu from Shinjuku to Fujisawa, plus 310 yen on the Enoden from Fujisawa to Kamakura (37 minutes).
If you’re visiting both Kamakura and Enoshima, buy the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass (1,640 yen from Shinjuku). It covers the Odakyu round trip and unlimited Enoden rides for the day. On a typical loop it saves about 390 yen over Suica. The full math is in Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass vs Enoden pass vs Suica, and you can buy the pass on Odakyu’s official Freepass page.
Want a reserved seat? The Romancecar limited express runs from Shinjuku to Katase-Enoshima for an extra 750 yen (700 yen online). From there, walk to Enoden Enoshima Station and ride 25 minutes to Kamakura for 260 yen. Neither pass includes the Romancecar seat fee.
Option 4: A guided day tour from Tokyo
If you’d rather not plan trains at all, a guided bus tour handles the whole day. The one I’d point you to is the Kamakura and Enoshima day trip including temple tickets on GetYourGuide. As of October 8, 2026, its page lists:
- Pickup: Ikebukuro at 7:40 a.m. or Shinjuku at 8:20 a.m., ending in Shinjuku only
- Length: about 9 to 9.5 hours on a shared bus, with an English-speaking guide
- Route: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Komachi-dori, Hasedera, the Great Buddha, then about 2 hours on Enoshima
- Included: entry tickets for Hasedera and the Great Buddha
- Not included: lunch, and the Sea Candle and Iwaya Caves on Enoshima
- Cancellation: free up to 24 hours before
It costs more than going by train, but it covers the same sights as my day trip itinerary without any transfers. Pickup times and prices can change, so check the tour page before you book.

Kamakura or Kita-Kamakura?
- Kamakura Station is the main hub. Get off here for Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Komachi-dori shopping street, and the Enoden to Hase for the Great Buddha and Hasedera.
- Kita-Kamakura Station is one stop earlier on JR. Get off here if you want to start with the Zen temples, such as Engaku-ji and Kencho-ji, and walk south to Kamakura.
The Odakyu and Enoden route arrives at the Enoden side of Kamakura Station, next to the JR station.
Tips
- Use Suica. It works on JR, Odakyu and the Enoden, so you can switch plans during the day without buying new tickets.
- Leave early on weekends. Kamakura gets crowded by late morning, and trains back to Tokyo fill up in the late afternoon.
- JR Pass holders: the JR Pass covers the Yokosuka and Shonan-Shinjuku lines, but not Odakyu or the Enoden.
